This is the parent qualification and the holder can be a slinger signaller with cranes, telehandlers, excavators and forklift (includes pick & carry).
Course Content

- Codes of practice – BS7121
- Roles and responsibilities of personnel involved with lifting operations including selection and competencies
- Documentation and certification for lifting equipment and lifting accessories
- Types of accessories and safe use
- Slinging techniques
- Down rating of accessories
- Sling angles and the effect on SWL
- Methods of communication
- Establishing load weight and centre of gravity
- Proximity hazards
- Selecting and pre use inspection of lifting accessories
- Verifying documentation and certification
- Attaching accessories to different loads using various slinging techniques
- Signalling for the lifting, transferring and positioning of loads
Course Duration
Four days inclusive of two technical tests covering both the theory and practical test elements. These tests are taken individually – a one hour verbal theory test and a one hour and twenty minute practical test with a mobile crane. Due to individual testing the test day may be non-consecutive.
Pre Course Requirement
Prior to attending the A40 course, candidates are required to have passed the CITB Operatives – OPs level (of higher SUPs or MAPs) HS&E touch screen test within the last 2 years.

However, if you require the smart phone app, use the link for purchasing this. There is also a mobile App that can be downloaded for £6.99 via the Apple App or Android Google Play stores – see the relevant version of the test revision material for links to the respective app. You can also make the booking over the telephone by calling 0344 994 4488. Lines are open from 8am to 8pm (Monday to Friday), and from 8am to 12pm (Saturday).
Alternatively, you can book and complete the HS&E Operatives test via the NOCN Hub (cost is £22.00), you just need to register for an account which is pretty easy. Please see the following link: NOCN Operative Health, Safety and Environment Test – CPCS
The cost is £22.00, and it means you can do the tests at home as long as you have a pc or laptop with a camera.
You book the test online and then take it the following day. It then takes up to 2x days to get the results
Certification
Successful candidates will be issued with a two year red CPCS Trained Operator card endorsed with the Slinger/Signaller category.
Next Steps
To obtain a 5 year blue Competent Operator card in this category, candidates must register for and complete the relevant Level 2 NVQ. They may also choose to extend their knowledge further by taking the CPCS Crane Lift Supervisor or Appointed Person courses
